Here are the results from last weekend’s BUCS Nationals:

Men’s Singles:

Stuart Pittman had an unlucky draw against a very strong player from Strathclyde Uni, sadly losing 21-16 21-18. Jacob Reynolds stormed through the third round and claimed his spot in the last 32 of the competition. Despite an admirable performance, Jacob then lost to a 5/8 seed 21-15 21-9. Zhang Hong was our only player to be seeded (9/16), he won his last 32 match 25-23 12-21 21-15 but sadly lost to a 5/8 seed from Loughborough 21-11 21-17 in the last 16.

Women’s Singles:

Rachel Scallan won her first match strongly in straight sets 21-6 21-4, but lost in the second round in three 21-16 17-21 21-17. Olivia Yu lost her first round game in three sets 21-19 13-21 21-13. Brittany Ashton smashed through the first three rounds without dropping a set, and keeping her opponents’ scores to single figures. In the last 32, she beat the number 9 seed in straight sets with a fantastic score of 21-17 21-14. In the last 16, Britt lost out to the number 2 seed with a score of 21-10 21-10. A truly incredible performance!

Men’s Doubles:

Conor Hutchinson & Tommy Reynolds won their first round game 21-14 21-19 and followed this up with a win in the second round 21-10 21-16. Their streak was stopped in the third round, losing a close game to 19 in the second set. Stuart Pittman and Jacob Reynolds stormed through the first 3 rounds without dropping a set before beating the number 9 seed 13-21 21-14 21-10 in a spectacular fashion. Sadly their amazing run ended in the last 16 when they battled it out against the number 1 seed with a fantastic score of 21-10 21-16. This was a monumental performance for EUBC, with our boys fighting till the end.

Women’s Doubles:

Brittany Ashton and Olivia Yu played fantastically, flying through the first three rounds without dropping a set. In the last 32, they lost to the number 5 seed 21-7 21-9. Rachel Scallan & Liselotte Van Balen got a bye in the first round and then won their second round game in straight sets 21-13 21-19. Their third round match was a closely fought battle and an excellent game to watch, though it sadly resulted in our girls losing in 3 sets 21-16 17-21 21-16.

Mixed Doubles:

Conor Hutchinson & Olivia Yu played well in their first round match but lost to strong opponents 21-15 21-13.
Tommy Reynolds and Liselotte van Balen won their first round match 21-17 21-17 and then went on to their second round match winning it 21-13 21-17. They sadly lost in the third round 21-13 21-19. Stuart Pittman and Brittany Ashton blasted through the first three rounds without dropping a set. They came up against the number 3 seeds in the last 32 and, despite taking them to three sets, couldn’t quite close out the win, losing 21-17 17-21 21-14.

This weekend was a fantastic display of the talent that EUBC has to offer and the results clearly show the hard work that our players have been putting in over the season. With a record high result in the men’s doubles and women’s singles, and with all other events matching previous years, this year’s trip to Sheffield had been a monumental success for EUBC! Bring on next year! #pride
